Today marks 4 weeks since our second son joined our family. Reflecting back 28 days ago seems like an eternity ago.
When the 24-hour mark hit at the hospital both my husband and I were itching to leave. As long as our son’s health and mine were fine, we were ready to get home and start our new normal as a family of 4.
It was a bit chaotic the day of discharge. Nurses and doctors in-and-out giving their sign-offs. I also HAD to have the hospital photographer do a quick newborn photoshoot. Priorities, I know.
My doctor came in when there was about 15 people in my small room. He asked “Are you sure you really want to go home today?” I told him I was going a bit stir crazy and NEEDED to go home. There isn’t really sleeping with a newborn in your home, but there is ZERO sleep in a hospital room with a newborn.
I am one of those people that need to go to the gym daily to destress. So as you can imagine, being stuck in a hospital room made me feel a bit claustrophobic. Need you may ask? Yes, NEED to go. When I workout I am less stressed, have less anxiety and generally a nicer person.
For 7+ years I have worked out almost every single day. Yes, I was even that super 39-week pregnant woman teaching my weekly spin class.
So 24-hours after giving birth to my second son, the only question I had for my doctor was “When can I start working out again?” My doctor was ready to answer and then I could tell he was looking at my husband standing behind me. Clearly he was giving my doctor the look of remember she does not take anything slowly look. Unfortunately, I am a foot shorter than my husband so there was no blocking the look exchange.
My doctor paused and said “2 weeks.” My husband was quick to ask for clarification stating that I was looking for when I can start running and weightlifting again. He laughed and said “2 weeks and you can start walking long distances.” He went on to say 4-6 weeks before I could start easing back into my normal workouts. Ugh. I took that as there was some wiggle room on the start date, but kept that to myself.
Today is the day I get to officially start getting back to it. I got a new pair of gym shoes ON SALE yesterday. I am looking forward to having some real alone time to workout and start to feel like me again. Minus the fact that I need to wear 2-3 sports bras for running. I will leave that for another day and blog post.
